  1. 1861-1938. French film pioneer, born in
  2. Paris. In the period 1896 to 1912 he made
  3. over 1,000 films, mostly fantasies, such as
  4. Le Voyage dans la Lune/A Trip to the Moon
  5. 1902. He developed trick effects such as slow
  6. motion, double exposure, and dissolves, and
  7. in 1897 built Europe's first film studio at
  8. Montreuil. He started out as a stage
  9. magician. His interest in cinema was sparked
  10. by the Lumiere brothers' cinematographe,
  11. premiered 1895. He constructed a camera and
  12. founded a production company, Star Film.
  13. Melies did not develop as a film-maker and
  14. the novelty of his films wore off, which
  15. caused him to go bankrupt 1913. He received a
  16. Legion of Honour medal 1931.
